HOUSTON — All-star Luis Castillo will make his Seattle Mariners debut Wednesday against the New York Yankees.

The Mariners acquired a right-hander from Cincinnati on Friday in hopes of bolstering their rotation as they chase their first playoff berth since 2001.

At 55-48, Seattle is 12 games behind Houston in the American League West standings but in second place for one of the three wild-card spots. Manager Scott Sarvis said Sunday that Castillo will start the series finale in New York.

Castillo, a top rookie on the trade market this year, will probably join a rotation with Logan Gilbert, Robbie Ray, Marco Gonzalez and Chris Flex.

Wednesday was Castillo’s last start for the Reds. The 29-year-old was 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA for last-place Cincinnati this season. He has 90 strikeouts and only 28 walks in 85 innings.

His strong performance comes with a career-worst 8-16 record, the most losses in the National League, and a 3.98 ERA.

The Reds got shortstops Noelvie Marte and Edwin Arroyo as well as right-handers Levi Stout and Andrew Moore in the trade. Marte was the Mariners’ top-rated prospect, with Arroyo third and Stout fifth.
