Arizona man buys 6.5K Mercury tickets to support Britney Greener’s team

PHOENIX – A Phoenix man bought the upper deck of the last Mercury home game to support Brittany Griner and her team.

Hours after Griner learned of her sentence in Russia on Thursday, Christopher Owens with Culture PHX went to the Footprint Center to buy the tickets.

He plans to give a portion of his ticket to 42 youth organizations – 42 to represent the BG number, “I have to, what kind of person to be, what kind of community person I am without speaking.” For others in the community? he asked.

On Friday, Owens handed out the first tickets at First Institute Baptist Church in Phoenix, hoping the tickets will be shared with youth and families who want to support the team.

“The sad thing is, the main reason we’re doing this, if the WNBA supported and did what the players should have, she wouldn’t be here in the first place,” Owens said.

The ticket will be next weekend for the Chicago Sky, which will be the team’s final home game of the season.

Owens is known as an activist for the African American community in the Phoenix area and has previously used the platform to buy tickets for youth. In the year In 2019, Owens brought 54 women’s basketball teams from across the valley to the Mercury.

Culture PHX tells ABC15 they will help promote local cultural events, including events supporting women’s sports.

Griner was subsequently sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia for his crimes.

Griner testified Thursday that she “made an honest mistake.” She also apologized to the WNBA and family.

Following Greener’s conviction and sentence, President Biden issued the following statement:

“Today, American Britney Griner received a prison sentence, one more reminder that the world already knows that Russia is unjustly imprisoning Britney. It is unacceptable, and I am calling for her immediate release from Russia to be with her beloved wife. My administration will continue to work tirelessly to bring Britney and Paul Whelan home safely as soon as possible.” It works and follows all the possible ways.

Owens will sell the remaining unissued tickets for free and use some of the money to benefit several nonprofits, including Brittany Greener’s nonprofit.
