Celtics ‘can’t rush to trust’ following Udoka suspension

CANTON, Mass. (AP) — Boston Celtics interim coach Joe Mazzulla says it will take time for people to “feel and heal” after former coach Ime Udoka was suspended for an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the organization.

“You can’t rush to trust. You cannot speed up healing. You can’t rush any of that,” he told a packed room at Celtics media day on Monday, three days after being promoted to interim head coach. “Regardless of what happens, we have a great roster and we have a good chance. That’s what I need to focus on.

Udoka was suspended Thursday for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a woman at the company, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the details of the character have not been made public.

Mazzula, 34, was an assistant with the Celtics for two seasons. His only coaching experience was at Division II Fairmont State.
