The linebacker finished the season with 58 tackles, 6.5 sacks and an interception and was a star for the USFL champion Birmingham Stilts.

Gates is the true definition of a football journeyman. In the year Out of Ole Miss in 2018, he signed with the Cleveland Browns. Since then he has spent time in the American Football Association, XFL, CFL and now the USFL. This marks his fourth NFL opportunity after failing to suit up with the Washington Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings in 2019 and 2020, respectively. He has good size at 6’2 and 220 pounds.

It will be interesting to see what the Bears have planned for him.

It won’t be easy. Gates is late to the party with training camp underway. The new defense system should be up quickly. That gives Gates more than a week to agree before the reviews get tough. It will be interesting to see how things go for him.
