College football picks: BYU and Utah ranked after Week 1


BYU and Utah are both in very recent rankings. Associated Press Top 25 Poll And USA Today coaches commented1 week after the college football season released on Tuesday.

But the two schools moved in opposite directions.

The Cougars jumped four spots to No. 21 in the AP poll and No. 25 in the coaches poll after opening the season. 50-21 win over South Florida.

The Utes, meanwhile, dropped six spots to No. 13 in the AP poll and seven spots to No. 15 in the coaches poll. Losing 29-26 to Florida.

The Gators came in at No. 12 in the AP Poll and No. 19 in the Coaches Poll after beating Utah in both polls.

Utah State also received five votes in the coaches’ election, later Losing to top ranked Alabama 55-0. The Aggies, who opened their season with a win over UConn, received 12 votes from the preseason coaches. USU received no votes in this week’s AP poll.

Next to BYU is Baylor, which jumped to No. 9 in the Coaches and No. 8 in the AP after a 69-10 win over Albany. The Cougars host the Bears this Saturday at 8:15pm MDT at Lavelle Edwards Stadium.

Two other BYU opponents this season, Notre Dame and Arkansas, were on the move after facing ranked opponents in Week 1.

The Fighting Irish dropped to No. 8 in the AP poll and No. 9 in the Coaches Poll after a 21-10 loss to Ohio State, while the Razorbacks beat Cincinnati, No. 16 in the AP and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. -24.

It was also high activity for the Pac-12.

Oregon lost to national champion Georgia 49-3 and the Ducks fell to No. 24 in the AP poll and the coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs, however, are now ranked No. 2 in both polls.

BYU plays Oregon on Sept. 24, while Utah faces the Ducks on Nov. 19.

That leaves USC, a 66-14 winner at Rice, as the Pac-12’s only other ranked team besides Utah in both polls. The Trojans, who play at Utah on Oct. 15, jumped four spots to No. 10 in the APA and moved up three spots to No. 13 in the Coaches.
