He started the game before being substituted after the first 45 minutes. He was seen leaving Old Trafford before the final whistle, with United sources refusing to comment on whether his early departure was ruled out by manager Erik ten Haag.

Ronaldo is keen to leave the club this summer to find regular Champions League football elsewhere. Although he has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, sources have told ESPN that United are yet to receive a serious offer for the Portuguese forward.

Sources told ESPN that Ten Haag encouraged members of the squad that played against Atletico Madrid 24 hours earlier to attend the friendly against Rayo.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay watched from the directors’ box, while the others were in the reception box. Ronaldo’s replacement Amad scored for United early in the second half before Alvaro Garcia equalized for the visitors shortly after as United ended their pre-season with three wins, two draws and one loss.

“Overall I’m happy, we had a good pre-race,” Ten Haag said. We are making good progress and ready for the season but I know there is still a lot to improve and we need to improve.

“Also, it’s a process that continues throughout the season, but the result for next week is the same. The reception was fantastic. I felt the feeling in the stadium, I felt the feeling they want to send to the team.

“There must be cooperation between the fans and the team, so to get the right feeling and especially the right results.”
