Davis Love III was still using the Persimmon Driver in 1997?! – GolfWRX

A metal driver revolution was happening rapidly in the early to mid-1990s, but the Davis Love III is set to stick with Cleveland’s classic oil-hardened RC85 Persimmon driver. But he was not oblivious to the emerging technology. He knows exactly what he’s doing and why.

“Cleveland has been in my bag since 1985,” Love III wrote in his 1997 book, “Every Shot I Take.” “It was given to me by a good friend, Bob Spence. I often experiment with iron drivers; I find that – for me, and not necessarily for you – they are slightly longer than my wooden driver, but they don’t give me any shape. I find it more difficult to shape my cars on the metal face, which is important to me. …I also love the sound my ball makes when it leaves the persimmon slot of my driver.

“I’m not a technophobe,” he added. “My show ‘woods’ have iron heads…but when it comes to the old wooden driver, I guess the only thing I can do is enjoy golfing with it more, and I think I play better with it…golf is like that. I enjoy playing with a wooden driver more.”

Although the book was published in 1997, Love III swapped his Persimmon driver for a Titleist 975D titanium driver that same year.

It was the end of an era.

But during his 12-year run with the Persimmon driver, Love III piled up four wins, including the 1992 Kmart Greater Greensboro Open – now known as the Wyndham Championship.

Love III, who is leading the U.S. team next month in the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C., is playing in the 2022 Wyndham Championship in nearby Greensboro. To celebrate, we’ve taken a look back at the archives to see what 3 clubs used to win in 1992. For an article on PGATOUR.com.
