Deverch hit a homer against the IL in a 2-1 win over the Boston Astros

HOUSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers returned from the injured list to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night with two RBIs, hours after acquiring veteran Eric Hosmer in a trade from San Diego.

Devers showed no signs of rust when he returned after sitting out July 23 with swelling in his right foot. He hit an RBI double in the fourth inning before hitting a solo homer with two outs in the sixth inning to help Boston to its third straight win.

Tommy Pham doubled off Devers in his first game against the Red Sox since Monday’s trade from Cincinnati.

The Hosmer trade comes a day after they sent Christian Vazquez to the Astros, a move that some players were disappointed with the team at the time.

Before Hosmer rejected the trade, it was part of the deal with Washington in which Juan Soto and the Padres sent him to Boston instead, along with two minor leaguers and a cash exchange for minor league lefty Jay Grove.

Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford (3-3) struck out seven in six strong innings for his first win since July 4.

Jordan Alvarez doubled off the wall in left-center field to start Houston’s eighth before Austin Davis walked Alex Bregman.

Davis beat Kyle Tucker before being replaced by Tanner Hawke. He retired Aldmis Diaz and Jeremy Penan to end the threat.

Trey Mancini, drafted from Baltimore on Monday, made his Astros debut in a pinch to start the ninth and grounded out. Vazquez made the first appearance for Houston when he was hit by a pinch hitter, and he also grounded out.

Hook then retired Jose Altuve on a long fly ball to center field to score his eighth save.

Manager Dusty Baker sent Vazquez on his lineup card before the game and tipped his hat to his teammates in the visitors’ dugout.

Houston’s Christian Javier (6-7) lost his fourth straight decision, giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings after winning the previous three.

Javier didn’t allow a hit until Pham got one out in the fourth. Devers Pham then doubled down the right-field line to score at 1-all.

In the sixth, Devers hit a single to right field to make it 2-1.

Jose Altuve hit a leadoff walk to score Yuli Gurriel to give Houston a 1-0 lead.

A day after trading for Vazquez and Mancini, the Astros bolstered their bullpen on Tuesday by acquiring left-hander Will Smith from Atlanta for starter Jake Odorizzi. Smith arrived at the Astros dugout early in the game and greeted several of his new teammates with hugs and handshakes to the relief of his teammates before heading to the dugout.
