James Oatman said he had a dream. He lived on Sunday.

The 25-year-old outfielder made his MLB debut on Sunday after being called up by the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his first at-bat of his MLB career, he hit a two-run home run against the Colorado Rockies to put the Dodgers ahead. Outman started the rookie bullpen at Coors Field with a 1-1 pitch against German Marquez, much to the delight of his friends and family in the stands.

Fiancé chronicles the moment — and her reaction — from her perspective.

Outman is not finished. He followed that up with two more hits en route to becoming the first player in Dodgers history to record the first home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored in his MLB debut. Anger at the plate gave the Dodgers a 7-3 win. He made all nine holes.

“I guess it’s a dream that I’ve had since I was like eight years old,” Outman told SportsNet LA.

“I blacked out as soon as I took the swing. I knew I was going to have a lot of nerves, so I was telling myself before the at-bat. It’s taken over for 20 years.”

The Dodgers selected O’Man in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Cal State Sacramento. MLB.com ranks him as the No. 17 prospect in the Dodgers system. He certainly got some more looks at the big league level than expected on Sunday.

“Historic — what a first,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. “It’s exciting to watch. You can just see the excitement. It’s a dream day for him to play like this. Today was about James Outman, and I couldn’t be happier.”
