CLEVELAND (AP) – Frankel Reyes, who started the season as a cleanup pitcher for the Cleveland Cavaliers, was designated for assignment on Saturday.
The 27-year-old outfielder/designated hitter was optioned to Triple-A Columbus earlier in the week after hitting .213 with nine home runs and 104 hits in 263 at-bats.
Rays hit 37 homers in 2019 — splitting the season between Cleveland and San Diego — and had 30 homers and a career-high 85 RBIs in 2021. He is making $4.55 million on a one-year contract and was arbitration eligible.
“Franmill wasn’t going for fastballs, and his breaking balls were for singles,” manager Terry Francona said. “There weren’t a lot of home runs. It was tough. It was difficult.
“We want to see our guys play, and this gives someone a chance to question him.”
If the Cubs clear trades, they have seven days to trade, release or send Reyes. The Rays have the time to refuse the opener in Cleveland.
