But security Jesse BatesOne of the team’s defensive leaders has been absent from all of training camp. He hasn’t signed his franchise tender yet, so technically Bates isn’t under contract and won’t be fined.
Bates attended the Bengals’ preseason opener last week. It is placed in a set. But there are no signs that he is close to returning to the team.
“JC’s business is his business,” Burroughs said Wednesday when asked about Bates.
“We’ll be excited to have him when he’s ready to come back,” Burrow continued, via SI.com’s James Rapier. “Obviously, Gee, a great player, a great person, a great friend. So we’ll accept it when the business is over. with open armsHe said.
Bates has been a key part of Cincinnati’s defense since entering the league as a second-round pick in 2018. Last season, he recorded 88 tackles for loss, three tackles for loss, an interception and four pass breakups in 15 games. He’s also been terrific in the postseason, recording a pair of tackles and six interceptions in four games.
