Spread the analysis

Both the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks are an uninspiring 5-5 in their last 10 games, but don’t let that fool you into thinking they’re evenly matched. During that 10-game stretch, the Sparks’ best wins were against any other sub-.500 team, while the Lynx beat two of the best teams in the WNBA in the Las Vegas Aces and Chicago Sky.

These two teams build their game from the inside out, but the Lynx are more successful doing exactly that. Minnesota, fittingly for a team that prizes color presence above all else, has the second-best rebounding rate in the league. Sparks theoretically have the same objectives, but their regeneration performance is a third worse.

Both are top 4 in the paint, but with the recent departure of Liz Cambage, there’s good reason to think the Sparks are about to see a big drop in that area. Los Angeles forces a good number of turnovers and scores well (the Lynx are vulnerable), but that alone isn’t enough to favor them.

While the Sparks seem to find ways to be more combustible each week on and off the court, the Lynx have quietly become competitive. They’re 5-1 against the spread in their last seven road games, while the Sparks’ unenviable 1-6 ATS record in their last seven games all point to Minnesota coming off this one.

Lock them up now before this line moves even more in Minnesota’s favor than it already has.

Prediction: Lynx -1 (-110 on Betway)

Basketball betting covers analysis.

Over/under analysis

When I say these groups are old school, I mean both praise and criticism. They’re physical, they play hard around the basket, and Sylvia Foles and Neka Oguwmike are two of them who can do that.

However, by leaving too many points on the board, the rivalry could be exacerbated by their reluctance to hit 3-pointers, possibly playing against each other. In a typical game, both dare their opponents to three shots, but when pitted against each other, they find few willing suitors.

The Sparks shoot fewer threes than any team in the WNBA, and if Lexie Brown isn’t good to go, they’ll shoot a few more against Minnesota. Even if Brown was cleared to play at the last minute, shooters generate power with their legs and an ankle that isn’t 100% is always going to be a hindrance.

Shooting means less spacing, and that plays right into Lynx’s hands. If you can’t spread the Lynx, you’ll be covering your offense more often than not.

Both teams will want to score in the paint and emphasize guarding it, and this could be a low-scoring game because the offenses aren’t top-notch even when they’re doing well.

Prediction: Under 166.5 (-110 on Betway)

Best bet

Records can be deceiving. At 11-19, the Lynx have significantly reduced their point differential to -1.4 and have a 14-16 win/loss record.

The Sparks managed to win more than their expected total, which is a reversal of their 10th place finish.

The Lynx have been the better team between the two all season despite not playing that way in the standings, and especially against each other, their similar strengths and weaknesses strongly suggest the Lynx cover.

Pick: Lynx -1 (-110 on Betway)
