Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez has been named Baseball America’s 2022 Major League Player of the Year, becoming the first M player to win the award.

Rodriguez hit .280/.342/.502 with 27 home runs and 25 stolen bases for Seattle this year.

“Baseball America annually selects the Rookie of the Year for all of Major League Baseball. Our Rookie of the Year is heavily weighted toward production in a player’s rookie season, but as part of the award, we try to weigh future potential a little bit. Well,” the organization said.

In late August, Rodriguez signed a massive new contract with the Mariners that guaranteed more than $200 million.

The Mariners confirmed that Rodriguez’s long-term contract extension includes 12 guaranteed years through the 2034 season and options through the 2039 season.
