Chelsea are in talks to sign Brighton left-back Mark Cucurella and are willing to pay the £50m asking price for the Manchester City target.
The Spaniard handed in a transfer request on Friday and attempted a move to City, but the Premier League champions won’t pay Brighton’s price and Chelsea are now in a strong position to sign the 24-year-old.
The Seagulls have previously rejected a £30m bid for the defender from Pep Guardiola’s side, who are looking for a replacement after Oleksandr Zinchenko joined Arsenal.
Cucurella enjoyed his first Premier League season since joining from Getafe last summer in a deal worth around £15m and was voted Brighton’s player of the season.
Brighton don’t want to let Cucurella leave and he has four years left on his Amex contract and would need a big offer to sell him. However, the left-back has now pushed for a move, asking for a sale.
Chelsea have moved to move for Cucurella amid doubts over the future of left-back Marcos Alonso, with Barcelona reportedly interested in signing the 31-year-old this summer. Blues captain Cesar Azpilicuet is also wanted by the Spanish giants.
First-choice left-back Ben Chilwell, who joined from Leicester for £50m in August 2020, missed most of last season with a knee injury but returned to full fitness in pre-season.
