The Mercury instead signed Yvonne “Vonnie” Turner to a contract to replace Tauras the rest of the way.
Taurasi last played in a loss to Phoenix. Connecticut Sun She played just 11 minutes last week, though, before going down with a quad injury. She hasn’t played since.
Taurasi, 40, is averaging 16.7 points, 3.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds this season, which is 18th in the league.
Turner bounced between the Minnesota Lynx and Atlanta Dream this season. The former Mercury guard averaged 4.3 points and two rebounds in six games.
The Mercury take a 14-19 record into Wednesday night’s game against the Minnesota Lynx. They are in eighth place in the league with three games remaining in the regular season, which gives them a chance to make the final playoffs.
It is unclear whether Taurasi will return next season after the injury. The veteran said she hasn’t made a decision one way or the other, but said she’s thinking about it this season. Either way, she said in July that she “started to feel a sense of closure.”
