The WNBA and NBA have called for the release of two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner after she was found guilty of drug charges. He was sentenced to nine years in prison. on Thursday.

“Today’s verdict and sentence is unfair and unfortunate, but not unexpected, and Brittney Griner was wrongfully imprisoned,” the statement read. “WNBA and NBA’s The determination of her safe return remains and it is our hope that we are at the end of this process.

President Biden previously issued a statement calling the trial and subsequent verdict “unacceptable.”

In Griner’s case, prosecutors had asked for a 9.5-year sentence, but the court last month took into account Griner’s guilty plea and imposed a nine-year sentence. She was also fined 1 million rubles, about $16,200.

Six-time WNBA All-Star and current head coach South Carolina Gamecocks Dawn Staley took to social media to respond to news of Griner’s sentencing.

Rebecca Koffler, a Russian-born former US intelligence officer and Expert on Russia and Vladimir PutinHe told Fox News Digital on Thursday that the road ahead to negotiate an agreement to secure Greener’s release will not be easy to navigate.

“Ms. Griner is a victim of a crisis in US-Russia relations, the worst in history, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. So it’s going to be a long road for her, especially given the reality. Even if Britney believes she violated Russian law, the US side will treat Ms. Griner’s arrest as It’s considered illegal, Koffler explained.

“The Biden administration is calling Griner ‘wrongfully arrested,’ so it’s a conflict between the two legal systems. Putin will do everything he can to force Washington to recognize this case as legitimate. In fact, Putin has full authority to release Griner, no matter what.
