Report: Benjamin Pavard has decided to stay with Bayern Munich

Question marks have been raised over Benjamin Pavard’s tenure at Bayern Munich in recent weeks. After last weekend’s friendly defeat by Bayern Munich against Manchester City in Green Bay, Wisconsin, he did not make his predictions any less aggressive when he said he did not know what his future held. However, according to French newspaper L’Equipe, Pavard has decided to remain a Bayern player, much to the delight of his teammate and French compatriot Lucas Hernandez, who recently said he would be happy for Pavard to remain a Bayern player.

While rumors have begun to surface that Pavard could be open to leaving the club this summer, it would seem to make sense on paper if Bayern’s front office is also open to that possibility. With the additions of Neussaire Mazrao and Matijs de Ligit this summer, Julian Nagelsmann’s depth at both center back and right-back, and the aforementioned signings, Pavard’s minutes are more at risk. Pavard has said he prefers centre-back to right-back, but with De Ligt added to the ranks of Diot Upamecano and Hernandez, he is now far less likely to get regular minutes at centre-back. Not to mention Pavard has competition from Mazrau and Josip Stanisz at right back.

In the DFL-Supercup win over RB Leipzig, Pavard started and lasted 78 minutes before coming on as a substitute for Mazrao, scoring the third of Bayern’s five goals with a brilliant left-footed strike in the 45th minute. This may be the starting line-up for Friday’s Bundesliga season opener against Eintracht Frankfurt, but it suggests that there is more faith in Pavard than Mazrau in Leipzig’s line-up. The latter still needs time to adapt to Bayern and Nagelsmann’s systems.

Pavard’s contract with Bayern runs until June 2024, but this summer was more than the club could afford to offload Pavard, with his market value at its highest level since last summer. That could easily change with consistent strong performances this season, but that’s not a given, and a roll of the dice Bayern are willing to take.
