WASHINGTON (AP) – New D.C. United manager Wayne Rooney didn’t have to wait long to get his first win.
Chris Durkin and Taksiachis Fountas scored second-half goals in Rooney’s debut as DC United beat Orlando City 2-1.
Rooney was appointed on July 12 but has had to sit out United’s last three games while waiting for his work visa to be approved. The 36-year-old Englishman played for DC from 2018-19.
Junior Urso scored in the 9th minute to give Orlando City (8-9-6) a 1-0 lead. Alexander Pato assisted on Urso’s 3rd goal of the season.
DC United (6-12-3) didn’t score until Chris Durkin found the back of the net in the first minute of overtime. Fauntas scored the game winner four minutes later. Falls has 11 goals this season. Martin Rodriguez assisted on both goals.
Rafael Romo made three saves for United. Pedro Gallese had two saves for Orlando.
beat Orlando United 15-8. Both teams scored four goals.
United’s last win was a 5-3 win at Orlando on July 4.
