Roto Riteup: July 29, 2022

This was really fun to watch.

Until you realize how it all started:

On the agenda:

Sleeper and chest DK competition deals (and rumours) of covid issues! Quick hits various news and notes streaming pitchers

Sleeper and chest DK competition

Most Tuesdays and Fridays and some other days, Paul Sporer and I have a $5 draft games for anyone interested. Once found, it will add a link.

Cases of covid

Andrew Chaffin was placed on the restricted list when the Tigers played in the series against Toronto. He should return after the Tigers return to America.

Businesses (and rumours)! Andrew Benintendi was traded from the Royals to the Yankees on Wednesday for three minor leaguers. Benintendi has been strongly linked to the Yankees for some time, but there were concerns that his vaccine status could keep him out of the Bronx after he missed the regular season in Toronto and was unable to play in the playoffs. But soon after the trade was revealed, there were reports that he intended to vaccinate after the trade. He denied those reports when he was in New York on Thursday, but said he was open to vaccination and “we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees are shopping Joe Gallo to several teams, but have yet to find a suitable offer. This is not surprising since Gallo allows me to share some of my tweets from yesterday this season:

Tyler Naquin was traded to the Mets for Philipp Diehl on Thursday. Naquin won’t get more playing time in New York and may be a better platoon bat for DFS going forward.

Quick successes

Tyler Wells is on the IL with side discomfort. This looks like a horrible injury that will definitely take 4-6 weeks to recover from. This causes it to fail in most formats.

George Springer left Thursday’s game with elbow discomfort. This seems like a precaution, but for now, think about it day by day.

Max Meyer will undergo Tommy John surgery. As soon as Meyer gets to the majors, that’s a huge blow. He will probably miss all of 2023 and return in 2024.

Corey Seager left Thursday’s game with a sprained ankle. For now, think about it day by day.

Various news and notes

Brady Singer threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 10 in a no-decision against the Yankees.

Brady continues to make strides despite being a two-point man. He had a 48% whiff rate on his slider and 20 called strikes with his dip. After all, his command and control were both flawless against the best offenses in baseball. He still needs a long time for the third time and he should be able to use the items regularly, but this is a good example of what it looks like when he does.

Spencer Howard threw five scoreless innings against the Angels, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five in the win.

This was a good streak for Howard, but not a very impressive start. Howard threw 55% fastballs and 37% cutters and really struggled with command, but the Angels were so depleted they never took advantage. I liked Howard as a young pitcher because of his clean mechanics, but he only threw his curveball five times and it was his best pitch this season. It’s no more than a matchup stream now that I need to start believing the curve and see if it can change before I see it count normally.

Stream Pitches (less than 50% on CBS)

Pitcher for today: None.

There are some high risk options but none that I’m really sure about.

High Risk Options: Madison Beamgarner at ATL, Dean Kremer at CIN, James Kaprielen at CHW

Pitcher for tomorrow: Reid Detmers vs TEX

Detmers has been good since returning from the minors and has a good matchup.

High risk options: Jake Junis vs CHC, Mitch Keller vs PHI, Glenn Otto at LAA, Drew Smiley at SF.

For those of you who want to see how these picks play out, I have a document I put together to track the stats of the recommended picks. It does not include “high risk options”.
