More details about any Chiefs defensive lineman are bound to emerge. Chris Jones said the Colts quarterback Matt Ryan to the Draw a flag that extends the drive Otherwise, he would have ended up with a punch.
According to a league source, referee Shawn Smith’s report after the game said Jones used “disturbing language” and that it “has no place in professional football.”
Smith penalized Jones for unsportsmanlike conduct. The source believes Smith, in hindsight, should have mentioned mocking as well.
Rule 12, Section 3, Clause 1(c) specifically includes the use of “insulting or taunting actions or words likely to create ill will between the team” within the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Still, it’s hard to see what Jones said as taunting and/or unsportsmanlike. Jones does not reveal what he said; But why should he? If the punishment is not based on actions that anyone watching the game can see, but on words that only Smith and perhaps few can hear, it should be accompanied by more detail so that the party throwing the flag can explain what he said. It was “stressful.”
Without such a difference, the result is disturbing for the princes. The decision to penalize Jones may have changed the outcome of the game. As much as other players and coaches need to know where the line is, it’s important to know what could put Jones on the wrong side.
