FALLS RIVER – Spindle City has become an August destination for amateur boxing.
The Ramble in the River is scheduled for Sunday, August 14, on Ponta Delgada Boulevard at the city/Portas da Cidade gate. The event is being run by professional boxer and owner of Stay Ready Boxing & Fitness Chris Jacobs and Stay Ready boxing trainer Carlos Alvarado.
Boxing starts at 1pm, entry at noon.
The show is taking place six days before another USA Boxing-sanctioned show in the same waterfront neighborhood.
Jacobs described The Rumble in the River as a children’s event, but emphasized that the expected 10-bout card will feature a bout or two featuring adults and teenagers, and possibly 8-year-olds.
Alvarado said he will box Southern New England Golden Gloves champion and favorite Fall River swingman Mikey Gaudreau on the card.
Get Ready Boxing and Fitness, located near the city gates, has a boxing program for kids ages 10 and up. Jacobs says this program helps bullied kids, and builds effective self-esteem.
For the August 14 performance, children 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets are $25 general admission, $35 ringside.
Jacobs said food trucks, other local vendors and local DJ Sammy Claus will provide the music.
“We want to have our own show in Fall River,” Alvarado said.

“This has been on our to-do list for years,” Jacobs said. “We’ve been wanting to get here and put on a big show like this here in Fall River.”
The city of Fall River was very cooperative in allowing the show to be shown at the Gates, Alvarado said. Not only is the location well-known, but it’s also good for boxing and fitness, he said.
Tickets can be purchased at the gates the day of the event or by visiting online. www.stayreadysport.com.
