Donald Trump has criticized a deal to replace WNBA player Brittany Griner with a Russian arms dealer.
Trump said Greener was a “corrupt person” who entered Russia “loaded with drugs.”
The Biden administration said the return of Griner and other detainees is a “high priority.”
Former President Donald Trump criticized the deal to turn WNBA player Brittany Griner into a Russian arms dealer, calling Griner a “corrupt person.”
The Biden administration has offered to trade Griner, and ex-Marine Paul Whelan is serving a 25-year prison sentence for Russian arms dealer Victor Butt.
Trump made comments about Griner and the proposed deal during an interview on “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.”
“She went into enemy territory, loading drugs there, into territory where they’re very vigilant about drugs. They don’t like drugs,” Trump said. “And she’s caught. And now we’ve got to take her out – and she’s got a lot of money, you know, I think – and we’ve got to take her out as an absolute killer and one of the biggest arms dealers in the world.”
Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, has been detained in Russia since her arrest in February (shortly before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine) at an airport outside Moscow when authorities said she found cannabis oil in her luggage. Her attorneys said she had a prescription for medical marijuana for pain. She pleaded guilty to drug trafficking as a result of a “prejudgment” that experts called a “demonstration test.”
Among other things, Bout is accused of selling arms to al-Qaeda and the Taliban, the New York Times reported.
“She’s going to get a free card, and we’re going to get her,” Trump said. “She knew you wouldn’t go in there loaded with drugs, and she accepted it. I guess she accepted it without too much force because it was what it was.”
The former president added: “It certainly doesn’t sound like a very good business, does it? It’s absolutely – one of the worst things in the world, and he’s going to give him his freedom because he’s going to Russia with a load of people who can be corrupted. With drugs.”
