INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Major League Baseball is considering playing games at Bosse Field in Evansville.
Originally built in 1915, Bosse Field is the third oldest baseball park in the United States, behind Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Boston’s Fenway Park.
Evansville Mayor Lloyd Wieneke told News 8’s Phil Sanchez Friday night that “unresolved” MLB executives have come to the city twice and the league hopes to host a game in the next two years.
“We were hoping to be on the 2023 schedule, but that didn’t happen because of a lot of scheduling conflicts in Major League Baseball, but we’re hoping it will be in 2024,” Winke said. Although there is no set date and it is not 100% confirmed, they have a good idea of how this special event could be and we are very excited to continue our discussions with them.
MLB is considering an Evansville game in 2021 based on the success of the “Field of Dreams” game in Dyersville, Iowa, where the movie was filmed. MLB is scheduled to play another game this season on August 11th. Bosse Field has a similar baseball movie heritage. It is where the movie “League of Their Own” was shot.
A lot of renovations are needed before MLB can play a game at Bosse Field. Winkeck said more than 4,700 permanent seats in the stadium – some dating back to the 1950s – need to be replaced. The bins must be retracted to meet MLB safety requirements.
The Republican mayor is predicting that the projects can be completed without the need for public funding. He told News 8 that since the ballpark is technically owned by the Evansville-Vanderburgh County School Corporation, funding for the projects is expected to come from the private sector.
Evansville City Council will have another meeting with MLB in September to discuss next steps.
