WNBA playoff drawing, standings, predictions: Sky Aces, keep beating Sun. Heat race for low seeds

With just over two weeks left in the 2022 WNBA regular season, the playoff picture is starting to heat up. Five teams punched their ticket to the playoffs — the Chicago Sky, Las Vegas Aces, Connecticut Sun, Seattle Storm and Washington Mystics — with the Indiana Fever the only team to lose.

Looking closer, there are no locked races, and some exciting races remain. The top three teams are all in the hunt for the No. 1 seed; The Hurricanes and Mystics are fighting for the fourth; And the six teams from 6th-11th are in the final three places in the real rest.

As a reminder, the WNBA has changed its winning system again. While the top eight teams still make the playoffs, there is no peace anymore. Instead, each team begins play in the first round in a standard bracket format of No. 1 seed vs. No. 8 seed, No. 2 seed vs. No. 7 seed, No. 3 seed vs. No. 6 seed, and No. 4 seed vs. No. 5 seed. The bracket is not seeded again after the first round.

The first-round matchups will be best-of-three series, with the higher seed playing Games 1 and 2 at home, and the lower seed hosting Game 3. Both the semi-finals and finals will be best-of-five series 2. -2-1 format, meaning the higher seeds host games 1, 2 and 5, while the lower seeded team hosts games 3 and 4.

As the action continues at full speed, take a closer look at footage of the race:

Race for the No. 1 seed

1. Chicago Sky (23-7) – The playoffs are tight

Remaining games: 6 (including Aces) Qualifiers: vs. Aces: 1-1 in season series with one game remaining. The Suns have won the series 3-0 in their current first-round matchup against the No. 8 Los Angeles Sparks.

Despite the absence of Candace Parker, the Sky pulled off an impressive comeback win over the Suns in overtime on Sunday. With this result, they beat Sun 3-0 in the season and confirmed the final match of the two teams. They also maintained their first position.

2. Las Vegas Aces (22-8) – The playoffs are tight

Games Remaining: 6 (Includes vs. Sky) Playoff Games: Sky: 1-1 Season Series With One Game To Go. The Suns won the first round of the season 2-1 vs. the Phoenix Mercury

The Aces are still on fire, and have now won four straight and seven of eight since the All-Star break. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to overtake the Sky who were equally good once the game resumed. The Aces are one game out of first against the Sky.

3. Connecticut Sun (20-10) — The playoff spot is tight

Remaining games: 6 draws, vs. Sky, lost series 0-3; Aces: Lost series 1-2 Current first round matchup: Against the Dallas Wings

The Suns’ hopes of chasing the sky on Sunday, however, blew a six-point lead in the final two minutes of overtime. With this defeat, the two teams lost the final game of the season and now have 3 games left in the standings. With only 6 games left, they are now heading for third place.

Two teams fighting for number 4

4. Seattle Hurricanes (18-11)

Remaining games: 5 ties vs. Mystics: Won season series 2-1 Current first round matchup: vs. No. 5 Washington Mystics

5. Washington Mystics (18-11)

Remaining games: 5Tbreakers vs. Tide: Losing streak 1-2 Current first-round matchup: vs. No. 4 Seattle Hurricanes

One of the tightest races right now is in the middle of the standings, with the Hurricanes and Mystics in the first round for fourth place and home-court advantage. On Saturday, the Hurricanes dominated the Mystics in the first game of a back-to-back weekend to secure the season series.

The Mystics bounced back on Sunday, however, with a crucial three-point win to move back into the top of the standings. The Mystics don’t have a playoff berth, but they have an easier schedule, and still have a good chance to take the fourth.

6. Dallas Wings (13-16)

Remaining games: 7 (at Mercury, vs. Sparks vs. Liberty x2) Tie-breaker: 2-1 with one game left in regular season. Against Sparks: 1-2 with one game left in season; With Dreams: The Lost Series 1-2; Against Liberty: 1-0 with two games left in season series; vs. Lynx: Won season series 2-1 Current first-round matchup: vs. No. 3 Connecticut Sun.

The Wings had lost seven of their last 10 games heading into Saturday, but had a big win in the Dream to get back on track. In addition, they jumped up to sixth in the standings. They still have a lot of work to do, but hitting the dream was a big step toward their second straight playoff appearance.

7. Phoenix Mercury (13-17)

Games remaining: 6 (including Liberty and Wings) Playoffs: vs. Sparks: Season series tied 2-2, currently owns playoff race with over .500 teams Wings 1-2 season series with one game remaining; With Dreams: The Lost Series 1-2; vs. Liberty: 1-1 season series with one game remaining; Against Lynx: Losing streak 0-3 Current first round matchup: 2 vs. Las Vegas Aces

The Mercury’s tricky East Coast road trip got off to a rough start with a 20-point loss to Liberty. It’s not a great result, but it’s not a disaster considering they’re still alone in seventh place and can clinch a game against Liberty later this season if they win at home.

8. Los Angeles Sparks (12-17)

Games Remaining: 7 (in Liberty x2, vs. Wings) Tie-in games: vs. Sparks: Season series tied 2-2, currently worst record against team over .500. Wings 2-1 in season series with one game remaining; With the Dream: 1-1 in the series with one game left; Against Liberty: 1-0 with two games left in season series; Lynx: Losing streak 1-2 Current first round matchup against No. 1 Chicago Sky

The Sparks’ slide continued on Sunday when they lost to the Lynx and in the process lost the divisional game between the two teams. They have now dropped three in a row and are clinging to the eighth and final qualifying spot by a thread. Their back-to-back against Liberty this week will be crucial.

9. Atlanta Dream (12-18)

Remaining games: 6 (vs. Sparks, v. Lynx, v. Liberty, Liberty) Odds: Mercury: Win season series 2-1. Sparks: 1-1 in series with one game left; Wings: Win the season series 2-1. Against Liberty: 1-1 with two games left in season series; vs. Lynx: 1-1 in season series with one game remaining Current first round matchup: N/A

There’s no good time for a four-game losing streak, but the final month of the season is especially painful. This current slide has taken the dream out of the game, and after Saturday’s heavy defeat at the Wings, they are now a full game out of eighth place. The good news is that they’ve won or tied in every playoff game, which could give them the upper hand in the playoffs come the end of the season.

10. Minnesota Lynx (12-19)

Remaining games: 5 (including Dream vs. Dream) Winners vs. Mercury: Season series won 3-0. Against the Sparks: They won the season series 2-1; Wings: Lost season series 1-2; With the Dream: 1-1 in the series with one game left; vs. Liberty: Won season series 2-1 Current first round matchup: N/A

The Lynx were on the ropes a few days ago but this team will not give up. After back-to-back wins against home hopefuls Dream and Sparks, they are now just one game behind the eighth-placed Sparks on points difference between the teams. The rest of their schedule is tough, but they’re still in the mix.

11. New York Liberty (11-18)

Remaining games: 7 (vs. Mercury vs. Sparks x2, vs. Mercury, vs. Wings x2, vs. Dream) Tie-in games: vs. Mercury: 1-1 with one game left in the series; Against Sparks: 0-1 with two games left in season series; The Wings are 0-1 with two games left in the series; With the Dream: 1-1 with two games left in the series; vs. Lynx: Lost season series 1-2 Current first round matchup: N/A

Liberty got a much-needed win by crushing the visiting Mercury on Sunday. This, coupled with losses to other teams in front of them, leaves them just one game behind the eighth-placed Sparks, who they will play twice this week. Freedom’s potential saving grace has always been their agenda. You should use it now.

The bottom of the play-off table is a messy affair, with the six teams between sixth and 11th separated by just two games. Every team has at least one game remaining against the teams in this division, and only a handful have drawn. All this means that these current levels will not last long.

12. Indiana Fever (5-27)

The Heat are now the first team out of the playoffs on a 14 game losing streak. With a sixth straight lottery on the road, they’ll be hoping for some chance at ping-pong balls to end the worst stretch in franchise history.
